After only a few months of dating Zoe Saldana and Marco Perego exchanged wedding vows in a private ceremony a little over two years ago and changed the game of
who takes who’s last name in marriage. Even though they have been married a couple of years the public is just now catching on that her husband Marco went the non-traditional way by taking Zoe’s last name.
“I tried to talk him out of it,” she told InStyle magazine. “I told him, ‘If you use my name, you’re going to be emasculated by your community of artists, by your Latin community of men, by the world.’ But Marco looks up at me and says (in his Italian accent), ‘Ah, Zoe, I don’t give a s**t.’ “
“Fathers, sons, brothers, men everywhere: Your legacy will not perish if you take your partner’s surname, or she keeps hers,” the Avatar star writes. “I felt proud that my husband decided to take my last name as his own… and I his.”
Traditionally, the women takes the man last name. This tradition can be traced way back when men owned everything from cattle to the big house that the women was supposed to raise the children in. Fast forward to 2015, Marco is now being praised for being a feminist for embracing the name change and realizing women have power in their name just as any man. The “Guardians of The Galaxy” star and husband gave birth to a set of twin boys to add to their SALDANA clan this past January. Kudos to Marco for being one with his wife. Would you take your wife’s last name or better yet ladies how would you feel if your husband wanted to take your last name? Does it matter, as long as you both say I DO! Will this start a new wave of women wanting their husband to take their last name? What do you think?
