Official Winner’s List from the 74th Golden Globes Awards!

Everyone tuned into the first major award show of the season, the 74th Annual Golden Globe Awards.  Donald Glover, and his hit TV show on FX “Atlanta” stole the night with wins in Best Actor and TV series in the Comedy & Musical categories.  What has everyone talking is his acceptance speech though, is when he goes on to thank the city of Atlanta, the black folks in it, and rap trio The Migos.

“I just really want to thank Atlanta and all the black folks in Atlanta. For real. Just for being alive and doing amazing [things] and being amazing people. I couldn’t be here without Atlanta. And I really want to thank the Migos—not for being in the show—but for making ‘Bad and Boujee.’ Like that’s the best song ever.” He calls them “The Beatles of this generation” and that “they don’t get a lot of respect.”

Unfortunately, Issa and the crew from “Insecure” didn’t take home any Golden Globes, but it is still one of my favorite shows to hit TV in a very long time.  Viola Davis also won for her supporting role in the hit stage play turned movie “Fences,” and Tracee Ellis Ross won for “Black-ish,” making her the first black actress to win in this category since Debbie Allen took home the trophy for Fame, in 1982.  She dedicated her Golden Globe to women of colour saying… “This is for all the women of colour and colourful people whose stories, ideas, and thoughts are not always considered worthy and valid and important. But I want you to know that I see you. We see you,” she said on stage.

Watch Donald Glover’s Backstage speech and question session below.

YO GOTTI: Behind The N9NE

We recently told you about Yo Gotti’s new project CM9.  Well here is an inside look at how it was made in 9 days, the team who helped him put it together, his home in the Hollywood Hills, and details of how he got started in the rap game.  The work ethic and the story behind what drives him will give you a new perspective on Gotti as an artist and entrepreneur.  “Everybody was big time drug dealers,” he explains. “My daddy was a big time drug dealer. My momma a big time drug dealer, her boyfriend. I think my upbringing set the tone for exactly who I am. I was raised by hustlers.”  yo-gotti-white-friday-cm9-album-cover-art

Is Kanye West Really Crazy?!

As most of you know by now, Kanye West a.k.a. Yeezus has been hospitalized in L.A. shortly after cancelling his Saint Pablo Tour on Saturday November 19, 2016.  The tour still had 21 dates remaining including a stop in Houston on December 2, 2016.  Ticketmaster is offering refunds, but what is really going on with Kanye?  This is a question many of us may never know, but his recent rants gives us some insight into the rapper’s struggles with the media, music superstars Jay-Z and Beyonce, racism and politics.

During saturday’s show in Sacramento, Kanye expressed his feelings over the radio playing the same songs over and over again…let’s not front though, turn your radio on and you will find yourself ranting and complaining about the same damn thing!  I know i do EVERYTIME! He also goes on to express that he is not pointing a finger at those who work in radio because they “have to feed their kids”, but he is speaking on the program directors and those who have a major hand in what the public is being fed musically.  He used Drake and DJ Khaled as examples of artists who stay in constant rotation by saying that “they set that shit up!”  West also goes on to expose Beyonce at the MTV Video Music Awards by saying that she refused to perform unless she won Video of the Year.  “We are all great, but sometimes we play into politics too much, F$#k being cool, F$#k winning” he screamed into the mic while standing on his platform a few hundred feet above the crowd.

Of course he was met with some applause and some resistance, but at the end of the day, you can’t knock this man for telling his truth. Kanye West has always been known as an artist that is not afraid to speak his mind whether it is about the music business, fellow rap artists, politics and even on who should have won video of the year.  So are we really surprised that all this is happening right now??  Is Kanye really the crazed, arrogant, hot headed, and drug induced man that everyone is saying he is?  Or is that a personal opinion placed on him, just as he has his own opinions and truths on what he experiences firsthand with artists and an industry that is known for being cutthroat and full of snakes?

Overall, i do believe that cancelling the tour was a bit much, however, i don’t knock the man for his viewpoints on Trump or Clinton. Everyone has a right to vote for who the like and if his decisions and feelings don’t line up with the majority, it does not give us a right to bash him.  During his rant he kept asking Khaled and Jay-Z to not send killers at his head…what exactly does he mean by that?  Is he in danger? What is really going on in the Life of Pablo?  Only time will tell and Mr. West has been and continues to be one of the most controversial artists of our generation leaving the question to be asked; Is he a mad genius or is he just mad?

Before i start let me say that this is my post, my opinion and if you do not like what i have to say, get your own platform!  Now that that is out the way……Ok BET, what happened to the red carpet event?  I honestly look forward to that every year.

Overall, i enjoyed the awards and i think it was a great idea to bring some old and new artists for the cyphers.  More cyphers than usual, BUT ima hip hop head so it’s cool.  I expected Khaled to scream through the entire show but he didn’t and for that HE THE BEST!  Not enough awards were given out..what happened to best collab, best video, best producer so on and so forth?  I also would have like to see Rae Sremmurd perform but hey, there is always next year and i hope to be able to attend one of them very soon 😀

I see where they were going with the whole show by introducing us to a lot of new artists whose names have been buzzin’ thru the streets, but people were unsure of who they were.  The awards were also about letting us know how powerful we were in the midst of all this police brutality, drug use and abuse, respecting ourselves and the importance of voting.  Which in my opinion, honestly, do not matter because they both have their own agendas and don’t care about our communities and our youth.  The US is in a tight situation with this election.  I don’t trust any politician but just make sure that before you go off of the words of how other people feel, do your own research and build your knowledge from there.  We can’t expect anyone to save us, we gotta save ourselves and change the world, build businesses and invest back into our own communities.  BET will show awards 25,352 times over the next week so make sure you tune in if you missed it!  AITE….

Lyricist of the Year-Kendrick Lamar he honestly deserved that award and im proud of him.

Although the “Suicide Squad” movie (featuring: Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Viola Davis and plenty others) was just released, it seems as though the only thing people can’t stop talking about is the soundtrack!! The official soundtrack features a few of our favorite artists and producers like: Rick Ross, Lil Wayne, Wiz Khalifa, Kehlani, Kevin Gates, G-Eazy, Eminem, Imagine Dragons, Skrillex, Action Bronson and more.  I never really listen to other people’s opinions when it comes to movies, but i heard that SS wasn’t that great, however, the soundtrack has a little something for everyone.  On top of that it just knocked DJ Khaled’s “Major Keys” off the charts from #1.  So take a few minutes and give it a quick listen.  I promise you won’t be disappointed.

Don’t Trump America

As many of you may have already heard and seen, Melania Trump, spoke last night at the Republican National Convention.  After she was done, she received an out pour of cheers and applause for her speech which seemed to touch and inspire everyone even if you are not a Trump supporter.  Here’s the catch though:

Prior to her speech, Melania interviewed with NBC News and told everyone “I wrote it”, and with a ‘little bit of help’ of course.  However, after listening to the speech below and comparing it to Michelle Obama’s Democratic National Convention Speech from 2008, it seems as though she had ALOT of help (c’mon son).  The speeches are identical and what bothers me the most is the fact that she is speaking on working hard for what you want in life, your word is your bond and inspiring children of this nation to reach for their dreams.  Your husband has old money.. im talking crypt keeper old…what struggling can you or him relate to?  no worries.. i’ll wait!

After this lil debacle, i really have no respect for the Trump campaign and see this whole movement as a joke.  If you haven’t been on twitter lately, now might be the time to get a good laugh on the trending hashtag #famousmelaniatrumpquotes  LOL people like Jesse Williams are going in on, and just like her speech, Trump’s campaign is a joke!!!

This year VH1 decided to honor a few of the most talented, beautiful and trendsetting femcees the rap game has ever seen.  I have to tell you, it was a star-studded celebration with no hating and nothing but love for women who helped kick down doors and create lanes for many of hip hop’s female rappers today.  Salt N’ Pepa & Spin, Queen Latifah, Missy Elliott and Lil Kim are the Queens of the night.

I don’t even know where to start, because there is so much to discuss with you all.  In all honesty, i loved all of the red carpet looks minus a few mishaps lol but ima keep it positive.  The show started out by honoring Missy “Misdemeanor” Elliott and i was really hoping to see her perform somewhere throughout the night.  Instead we got Remy Ma who brought her slow drag rap to what was supposed to be an upbeat Missy.  Oh, but she came alive during the TS performance of “All The Way Up”…blah!    On a different note, Eve, Nelly Furtado and Trina was definitely the highlight of her tribute.  One of the most powerful things that came out about Missy was from Angie Martinez who said “Missy believed in her talent, her beauty, and her skills”, which is what made her the Queen and Icon that she has become.  She was also serenaded by Fantasia, Monica and Tweet who sang (yes sang) a couple of hits that she wrote for them.  Is it me or did Fanny get hella thick (in a great way).

Next up was the Queen..Latifah that is, and just like the performer she is, she graced the stage and opened her dedication herself with her hit “Come Into My House.”  Yasss Latifah take me back! Rah Digga, Lady of Rage, Treach, Yo-Yo, Da Brat and Monie Love performed a few hits of Latifah’s throughout the years.  What took the cake though, was Ms. Betty White reciting the lyrics to U.N.I.T.Y.  lol classic moment.  Was i the only one who thought that Treach was sexy as ever with his salt n pepper beard and took us on a flashback to the 90’s when Naughty by Nature performed Hip Hop Hooray?!  I know i wasn’t the only one thinking this.  Speaking of Salt N’ Pepa and Spinderella, the beautiful ladies of OITNB started out their presentation with Dascha Polanco slaying all her thickness and Taryn Manning slurring over her words.  However, the show must continue and it did with Eve performing one of my faves Shoop, Ashanti rapping Whatta man and the Dreezy/Keke Palmer duo Push’n It.  Of course the Slut Walk Queen Amber Rose had to come out and do her rendition of Let’s Talk About Sex, but i hated it.  Moving on…Salt N’ Pepa reminisced on their 1st tour (Wipeout Tour) with The Fat Boys and still being blessed to sell out arenas 30 years later.  It would have been dope to see Pepa’s daughter Egypt perform one of her songs.

And Last but certainly not least, the Original Queen Bee (Artist &Provocateur) Lil Kim was introduced by fellow bad boy member Faith Evans and surprised by Diddy with a huge birthday cake.  Happy Birthday Queen Bee!  Her beautiful daughter Royal Reign was in the building while The Lox, Lil Mama, Dej Loaf, French Montana and Teyana Taylor (who straight embodied Lil Kim) killed their tribute performances.  My only issue during Lil Kim’s live on stage performance was Rich Homie Quan forgetting Biggie’s lyrics.  Bruh, you had one job to do that job and you messed that up.  The Lox were there, why not get Jadakiss or somebody to do Biggie?!  Hell, French Montana could have done it.

My favorite part of the night was the very end, when they paid tribute to all of the female rappers throughout the years including Mia X, Roxanne Shante, MC Lyte and Boss (aye!) just to name a few.  It was empowering and a true proud moment especially for me because all of these women inspired my rap career at some point.  Queen Latifah said it best when she urged for hip hop fans to “give the female emcees a true listen, we could teach you something”, and that is exactly what all 6 of these women did in music.  A genre that did not welcome females until a few strong, bold and beautiful women kicked down some doors and left them wide open.  In the words of Diddy “VH1 what took ya’ll so long!?”
